“It’s dusty, bumpy, hot and a bit overwhelming. It’s the pathway of a Mobile Messenger. As our team travels down the dirt roads and dry riverbeds outside Mwingi Town, we can’t help but wonder how Charles walked all this way…why he walked all this way to come to this village. Our wonder soon turns to sorrow as we are bordered on both sides by field after field of brown corn stalks. They’re dead. Before the corn ever had a chance to produce a crop of food the rains stopped. Now they simply stand as a reminder of the drought that grips this land and strangles these wonderful people.

The van stops by a little wooden structure. We quietly climb out overcome by the solemnness of it all. We’re still trying to process. In this dry land our sadness is interrupted by singing. Praise! These same people we had grown to feel such pity for, where coming out to greet us one by one. The singing never stopped. Each smiling face a reminder that the joy of the Lord is not dependent on a worldly crop. And, we will never in our lives forget the phrase, “you are welcome.”

We spent the morning worshiping, praying and teaching in the church of a Mobile Messenger. We visited orphans being cared for by members of this new congregation. We visited an older lady being cared for by these people. How do they help others – what do they have? We watched as the tiny aisle between the wooden benches filled with singing people walking to the offering basket to give God an offering. Some brought change, some brought fruit, some brought food. Whatever they had to give. Whatever they had to share.

Our time in Mwingi ended under an acacia tree. I sat surrounded by eleven future Mobile Messengers seeking to learn all they could in our short visit. Eleven new Christian leaders from this one small church. A few questions and some small gifts and it was time to go. Back down the dusty road. Back over the bumps. Back through the corn fields. And, though we still pray with all our hearts for rain to transform this land, we now know in the path of the Mobile Messenger God can bring a harvest no matter the worldly circumstances.”

It’s interesting how certain passages of Scripture or little phrases can become the theme of a mission trip, family vacation or group outing. They aren’t planned. They just seem to capture the spirit of the experience and bring to mind the memories of significant events and feelings of the group.

I believe this trip to Kenya will have a special attachment to Paul’s words from Romans 10, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” It’s not very common for men to sit around talking about beauty and feet. However, this passage has opened our eyes to be observant and considerate of the special Mobile Messengers and chaplains hosting us here in Nairobi.

We have been careful to listen, learn, and invest in the lives of our Mobile Messengers as we serve together these special few days. We have seen doors open to Kamiti Maximum Security prison as we walked together through the bars and stood together among more than 300 men serving life or death penalty sentences. We all shared a unified message of hope that included the truth that no prison bars or chains could prevent a man of knowing freedom in Christ. During our program, one young man experienced that truth for the first time. We have a new brother at Kamiti to lift up in prayer daily.

This morning we had the opportunity to visit Remand Prison and assist in leading the church service for the prison guards and their families. Our friend Pastor Mongrose helped to organize all of these opportunities, and one of our Mobile Messengers served as the main speaker for the morning. Again, we had the blessing to worship with and learn from these special men of God.

We have an incredible team of men form the U.S. with us on this project. Each one of them is a leader in ministry or business. Their humble spirit is refreshing and their investment in the lives of the Mobile Messengers has been powerful. They have encouraged, listened, preached, shared, and served in every situation.

Mobile Messengers and servant leaders. A world changing combination of partnership. They are bound together by a passion for God and a commitment to evangelism. Though I haven’t taken a good look at their toes, I know they all have beautiful feet. For these are the people bringing the good news to Kenya.

Yesterday, our devotion was based on Romans 10. In God’s intimate leading it was ended in the same way, as one of our team members got a sweet email of encouragement from his daughter. At the end of the email, she simply wrote this to her dad… “Remember, how beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news.”

A 40′ container filled with basic needs and medical supplies arrived in Lui, South Sudan yesterday. On hand to receive the container were Mobile Messengers who have waited a long time for aid to distribute to their people at Lui Hospital and surrounding villages. Many of the needs of the suffering people in Lui were documented by our co-founder, James Harrison, in the original ‘With Open Eyes’ documentary. His compassion for the suffering people in Sudan inspired the very forming of our foundation so this marks a very special milestone in the history of With Open Eyes. Special thanks to our resource partner, Gleaning For The World, and the Episcopal Church of South Sudan – Lui Diocese. Also, we would like to express a sincere thank you to the supporters who gave so graciously to carry on the good work that the Lord began through the determination of a young man whose heart was full of compassion.

Join us in prayer! A team departed yesterday from Charlotte, NC to work alongside former prisoners, now Mobile Messengers in Kenya. Today, they are anointed evangelists and church planters who remain committed to serve current inmates in the same prison system where local chaplains brought them hope and change. The team will be working at various prisons throughout Kenya, including Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in Nairobi. They will then follow the Mobile Messengers into villages to visit a few of the churches they planted in 2011. We are so grateful for the commitment of these men to serve the under-served! Check our website daily for updates!

“My ministry is growing rapidly; many people are turning their lives to the Lordship of Christ. I’m able to reach villages that I won’t have reached without a motorbike; a ministry trip that took me 7 days is now taking me two days and the results are amazing as I’m not tired from walking as I used to. Where I needed 2 days, I now go in the morning, spend the day ministering then come back in the evening. I’m now a better parent as I’m able to spend most evenings with my family as I’m now mobile and independent. More importantly, the harvest is far much more that I had witnessed before. Pray with those new church plants that are resulting from this accelerated witnessing and proclamation of the gospel through our partnership with With Open Eyes; these people are meeting in the cold and rain for lack of a roof but they are happy and are growing in their faith in Jesus Christ.”
